Questionmark's Open Assessment Platform

Moodle

Moodle™ is an open-source e-learning software application that uses a modular design, and is designed to help educators create effective online learning sites. Moodle is free to download and use, and can be run on Windows, Mac OS X, UNIX, or Linux servers. You can easily include your Perception assessments within Moodle in three main ways:

  • By using a link to a file or web site
  • By using a link to a file or web site and by using parameters
  • By composing a web page (embedding the assessment within your Moodle page)

All three methods can be achieved by using the Add a resource… dropd-own list when editing is turned on.

Using Link to a file or website

On the Moodle page you wish the assessment to appear complete the following steps:

  1. Within the Add a resource… drop-down list, select Link to a file or web site. The Adding a new Resource screen will open.
  2. Add a direct link to the assessment in the Link to a file or web site box; for example:

    http://myserver/Perception5/open.php?session=9581730532955133&name=tryout

  3. Click Save and display to create the link.

This will result in the linked Questionmark assessment opening in your browser.

Using "Link to a file or web site" and parameters

It is also possible to use the above method to pass additional customized information about the participant.

On the Moodle page you wish the assessment to appear within:

  1. Within the Add a resource… drop-down list, select Link to a file or web site. The Adding a new Resource screen will open
  2. Add a direct link to the assessment in the Link to a file or web site box; for example:
  3. If you wish, you can customize the link to your assessment by using parameters. To use parameters, click on the Advanced button and add the parameters you wish to include. For example:
  • To get the participants username add name into the Variable name and select User – Username from the drop-down list.
  • To get the participants group add group into the Variable name and select Course – ID from the drop-down list.

This would link to the same assessment as in the previous example. However, this method would also pass the username and group into the Perception repository for the specific Moodle user. It is also possible to add further parameters in to the special fields options in Perception.

Composing a web page (embedding the assessment within your Moodle page)

On the Moodle page you wish the assessment to appear within complete the following steps:

  1. Within the Add a resource… drop-down list, select Compose a webpage.
  2. Add the iFrame code into the HTML editor to display your assessment within an iFrame. The resulting tag should look like this:

    <iframe width="100%" height="400" frameborder="0" scrolling="auto" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://myserver/Perception5/open.php?session=9581730532955133&name=tryout">

    </iframe>

  3. Click Save and display to make the changes.

This would result in the assessment appearing within Moodle as below:
