Using the text formatting toolbar

The text formatting toolbar enables you to:

  • present text in any way you wish,
  • include symbols in your text,
  • add links,
  • add graphics, video, sound, and Flash files,
  • embed external videos,
  • add and edit mathematical equations,
  • add a table,
  • and edit the HTML of a rich text field.

To edit the format of the text, highlight the text you wish to format and select the appropriate option from the toolbar. The following formatting is available:

  • Bold
  • Italic
  • Underline
  • Subscript
  • Superscript
  • Left align
  • Center align
  • Right align
  • Insert numbered list
  • Insert bulleted list

The text formatting toolbar can also be used to add symbols (special characters, like "µ" or "®") to the editable text. Click the Insert Symbol icon and select the symbol you want to insert.

To add a link, highlight the text you would like to turn into a link and click the Add Link icon. Enter the URL for the link and a Title. You can select the link to open in a new window or use the current window. Once you have filled in the information, click OK to add the link.

To add items like graphics, video, sounds, Flash files, embed external videos, or add mathematical equations, place the cursor where you want to insert any of the elements outlined and click the appropriate icon.

Please note that the file uploader automatically filters for the supported file types listed below, and only supported file types will be presented in the file selection window.

You can:

Add an image

Click the Add Image button, click Browse, and then navigate to where the image is located on your computer. Select it and click Open. You can use GIF, JPEG/JPG, and PNG images up to 20 MB in size in a question. You can specify the Height and Width of the image (in pixels) as well as add some alternative text for the image in the Alt text field. Once you have added all the required information, click OK.

Add a video

.avi is an old video format, and Questionmark recommends that newer video formats (such as .mpeg) be used in content to avoid issues.

Click Browse, and navigate to where the video is located on your computer. Select it, and click Open. You can use .avi, .wmv, .mov, .mpg, and .mpeg video types up to 100 MB in size in your questions. The video clip will be uploaded to the Questionmark server. It is possible to determine if the video should Repeat playback and if the video should Play at startup when the page is loaded. You can specify the Height and Width of the video (in pixels) as well as add some alternative text for the video in the Alt text field. If you select the Include as link option and then enter some text in the corresponding field, the video appear as a link that will open in a new tab once the link is clicked. Once you have added all the required information, click OK.

Add a sound

Click Browse, and navigate to where the audio clip is located on your computer. Select it, and click Open. You can use .wav, .mp3, .wma, .mid, and .rm file types in your questions. The audio clip will be uploaded to the Questionmark server. It is possible to determine if the sound should Repeat playback and if the sound clip should Play at startup when the page is loaded. You can specify the Height and Width of the audio clip (in pixels) as well as add some alternative text for the audio clip in the Alt text field. If you select the Include as link option and then enter some text in the corresponding field, the audio file appear as a link that will open in a new tab once the link is clicked. Once you have added all the required information, click OK.

Add a Flash file

Click Browse, and navigate to where the Flash file is located on your computer. Flash files use the extension .swf. Select it, and click Open. You can specify the Height and Width of the Flash content displayed to participants (in pixels) as well as add some alternative text for the Flash content in the Alt text field. Once you have added all the required information, click OK.

Embed a video

You can use this feature to embed videos up to 100 MB in size from external sources within the question wording of questions in Authoring rather than uploading videos onto the Questionmark server. Click the Embed Video icon to open the Embed Video screen. To embed a YouTube video, choose YouTube from the drop-down box and enter the URL of the YouTube video (e.g., http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6ZMD2rAPXo). If you would like to embed video files stored on another server, choose Custom from the drop-down box and provide the full URL path to the file. Please note:

  • .avi, .wmv, .mov.mpg, .mpeg, and .mp4 video formats are supported,
  • .wav, .mp3, .wma, .mid, and .rm audio formats are supported,
  • the participant's device must have a video player associated with the file type for the video to be displayed (e.g., Windows Media Player for a WMV file),
  • and the file must be served over a secure (https://) connection.

Set the Height and Width of the video in pixels, or choose from the four sizes displayed. Once you provide the dimensions, a preview of the video will be displayed. Click OK to embed the selected video within the question wording.

Embed a mathematical equation

You can use this feature to add mathematical equations to your question. Place the cursor where you want to add an equation, and click the Questionmark Formula Editor icon to open the Questionmark Formula Editor window. In this window, you can create an equation using the provided tools. Once you are finished creating your equation, click OK to save the equation and add it to your question. To edit an existing equation, double-click on it to open the Questionmark Formula Editor window and the equation. Add a mathematical equation using LaTeX

You can use this feature to add mathematical equations written in LaTeX to your question. Place the cursor where you want to add an equation, and click the Questionmark LaTeX Editor icon to open the Questionmark LaTeX Editor window. In the text field, you can enter an equation written in LaTeX. Once you are finished entering your equation, click OK to save the equation and add it to your question. To edit an existing LaTeX equation, double-click on it to open the Questionmark LaTeX Editor window and the equation for editing.

Add a table

The table editor is currently only available in the rich text fields of the 

  • advanced question editor
  • and the assessment editor.

You can use the table editor to create a table in a rich text field. To do so:

  • Click the Table Editor button at the location at which you want to add a table, click Create table in the editor, and then choose the dimensions you desire for the table.
    • You can create up to a 6x8 table using the UI, but you can use the Add column to the leftAdd column to the rightAdd row aboveAdd row belowDelete row, and Delete column buttons to further edit the number of rows and columns in your table.

Insert content

To insert content, which will appear as a link, in a text field:

  1. Click.
  2. Choose whether to insert a file or a URL in the text field.
    • Click File to insert a file.
      • Click Browse and then navigate to the location of the file you want to insert and then click Open.
    • Alternatively, click URL to insert a URL.
      • Enter a URL in the Enter the URL here field.
  3. Choose whether the link to the content will be an image (20 MB maximum) or text.
  4. Select the desired characteristics, including the height and width, of the new window for the content.
  5. Click OK to insert the content or Cancel to return to close the dialog without inserting the content.

Edit the HTML 

The HTML editor is currently only available in the

  • advanced question editor
  • the assessment editor
  • and the standard editor for the following question types:
    • Multiple Choice
    • Yes/No
    • True/False
    • Likert
    • Select a Blank
    • Fill in the Blanks
    • Knowledge Matrix
    • Ranking
    • Explanation
    • File Upload
    • Drag and Drop
    • and Hotspot.

You can use the HTML editor to edit all of the HTML in a rich text field. To do so:

  • Click Edit HTML button to view and edit all of the HTML in the rich text field.
