Survey Matrix question

In the question editor for the Survey Matrix question, you can specify:

In a Survey Matrix question, participants are presented several Multiple Choice questions together and selects one choice for each question presented.

When you have entered the question wording, question rows, and selected the desired scale for the question, it is recommended that you check the spelling of all text that has been entered. To do so, click the Spell check button.

The following options are available when saving a question:

  1. Click Save to save all changes and continue editing the question. A message appears confirming the question has been saved.
  2. Click the drop-down arrow next to the Save button and then:
    • select Save and new Multiple Choice to save all changes and begin creating a new Multiple Choice question,
    • hover over Save and new..., and then select the type of question to create,
    • or select Save and exit to save all changes and exit the question editor.

If changes have been made to a question, a revision comment must be entered first before exiting the question editor.

Click Exit to leave the question editor. If any changes have been made to the question, a message appears warning that these changes will not be saved.

Setting the delivery style

It is possible to choose how you want to deliver the question. You can deliver the question in the following styles:

  • Scored records scores for each choice selected in each question row.
  • Unscored provides a simple question layout for survey-based assessments with no scoring recorded.

Adding the question wording

To create or edit the wording for your question, click where it says Click here to change the question wording and enter the desired question wording. You can use the text formatting toolbar to present the question wording in any way you wish. Refer to Using the text formatting toolbar for more information on how to do this.

Creating question rows

When you create a Survey Matrix question, several rows are automatically added to the question. The text of these default rows are set to Enter question text to go in the row of your matrix. To change this text, click where it says "Enter question test to go in the row of your matrix" and enter the desired text. You can use the text formatting toolbar to present rows in any way you wish. Refer to Using the text formatting toolbar for more information on how to do this.

To add an additional question row, click Add new question row. The new question row will be added to the list below the existing rows.

To delete a question row, click the delete button next to the question row.

Ordering question rows

Once you have created your question rows, you can specify if you want them to be presented in a particular order. To arrange your rows in a particular order, select a row and drag it to the desired location.

Selecting a choice scale

Choice scales determine the choices participants will select between for each question row.

Four default choice scales can be selected for Survey Matrix question:

  • Agree | Disagree
  • I like this | I do not like this
  • Like me | Not like me
  • Satisfied | Dissatisfied

To change the number of choices available to participants when using one of the four default scales, use the Show drop-down list to specify a number. When using a default choice scale, you can have as few as 3 or as many as 10 choices per question row.

Adding a "Not applicable" choice

To add a "Not applicable" choice to a choice scale, which will appear as the last option in a choice scale, select the Add "Not applicable" choice option.

Creating a custom choice scale

To create your own choice scale:

  1. Click Create or modify your own scales.
  2. Click New.
  3. Enter a title for the choice scale in the Title field.
  4. Select the number of possible choice for the scale (as few as 3 and up to 10).
  5. Enter the desired wording for each choice in the respective field for each choice. 
  6. Enter a score for each choice in the field to the right of the choice wording field.
  7. Click Add. The option will be added to the table above.
  8. After you have entered the desired text and score for each scale choice, click OK to save the new choice scale.

The new custom choice scale will appear in scale drop-down list above all existing choice scales, where it can be selected.

    Editing the question's properties

    Authors can view and define specific properties about questions. These details can be used by other authors to help review the question or identify where in the workflow process it is. For details about the available properties, please refer to Assigning question properties.

    Adding a comment box

    Adding a comment box to a question enables participants to provide a response to the question. This is particularly useful when creating surveys.

    To add a comment box to a question, click Add comment box. The comment box will be added to the bottom of the question.

    Once a comment box has been added, you can edit the text used to introduce the comment box. By default, this is "Add your comment".

    You can also size the comment box by clicking and dragging the box to the desired size.

    Adding a note

    All of the users who have permissions to edit a question can add notes to it. Notes will not be shown to participants. To add a note to the question:

    1. Click Notes.
    2. Enter a note in the Note field.
    3. Click Post to post the note. It will appear below any existing notes. All users who have permissions to view and edit the question will be able to see the note.
      • Clicking Clear will remove all of the text in the Note field.
