Hotspot question

Applies to the following products:
Questionmark OnDemand
Questionmark OnPremise

On this screen, you can specify the following details for a Hotspot question:

Hotspot questions are like Drag and Drop questions but with only one "hot" area (aka the "hotspot") on an image that can be selected. Participants place a single marker on the image to indicate their answer.

When you have entered the question wording and description, it is recommended that you check the spelling of your text. To do so, click the Spell check button.

The following options are available when saving a question:

  1. Click Save to save all changes and continue editing the question. A message appears confirming the question has been saved.
  2. Click the drop-down arrow next to the Save button and then:
    • select Save and new Multiple Choice to save all changes and begin creating a new Multiple Choice question,
    • hover over Save and new..., and then select the type of question to create,
    • or select Save and exit to save all changes and exit the question editor.

If changes have been made to a question, a revision comment must be entered first before exiting the question editor.

Click Exit to leave the question editor. If any changes have been made to the question, a message appears warning that these changes will not be saved.

Setting the delivery style

It is possible to choose how you want to deliver your Hotspot question. You can deliver the question in the following styles:

  • Scored provides the ability to add specific scoring and feedback values to the question choices
  • Unscored provides a simple question layout for survey-based assessments without the ability to set scores or add feedback

Adding the question wording

To create or edit the wording for your Hotspot question, click where it says Click here to change the question wording and enter the question wording you desire. You can use the text formatting toolbar to present the question wording in any way you wish. Refer to Using the text formatting toolbar for more information on how to do this.

Adding a background image

When you create a Hotspot question, there is a placeholder background image in place. An area for participants to click on will be defined on the image that is selected as the background image for the question. To change the placeholder image to your own image:

  1. Click the Change background image button on the left side of the screen. The "Select image" window will open.
  2. Click Browse.
  3. Navigate to the location of the image you want to upload and select the image.
    • You can upload JPG, JPEG, GIF, and PNG images up to 20 MB in size.
  4. Click Open. The image will be uploaded.
  5. Click OK (you can click Cancel to abort the upload).

Once you have added a background image, it will appear beneath the question wording.

Selecting the marker image

The marker image is what a participant uses to mark their answer in a Hotspot question. To select the marker image:

  1. Click the marker thumbnail on the left side of the screen. The "Select a marker" window will open.
  2. Select one of the available markers or click Browse to upload your own image to use as the marker.
    • If you are uploading your own image, navigate to the location of the image you want to upload and select the image and click Open.
    • You can upload JPG, JPEG, GIF, and PNG images up to 20 MB in size.
  3. Click OK (you can click Cancel to cancel the marker image change).

Once you have selected or uploaded a marker image, it will appear below the background image and as the marker image button. The image that you upload as your marker will be displayed at full resolution, so keep this in mind when selecting an image to use as a marker. Recommended dimensions for markers are:

  • 24x24 (pixels)
  • 36x36
  • 48x48

Specifying the target region

The "target region" is the region on the background image that will be marked as correct if selected by a participant. Once you have added your own background image and selected the marker image you want to use, to specify the target region:

  1. Click Set region on the left side of the screen. You can only select this if you have added a background image.
  2. Choose one of the three available shapes for the marker: Rectangle, Circle, or Polygon.
    • If you choose a rectangle or circle marker, you can click and drag to create the size of rectangle/circle you want and move it to the desired location on the background image.
    • If you choose a polygon, you can click on different points on the background image to create the corners of the shape you desire as well as drag it to the desired location on the background image.
    • You can right-click on a point on a polygonal region to delete it.
  3. Click OK (you can click Cancel to cancel specifying the target region).

After you have specified the target region, it will then appear on the background image on the question editor page.

If you are using a non-HTML5 browser (e.g., Internet Explorer 7 or 8), you will only be able to create a rectangular target region. If you create a circular or polygonal region in an HTML5-compatible browser (e.g., Internet Explorer 9 or higher), but then later edit that question in a non-HTML5 browser, the target region will appear as a rectangle and you will be unable to edit it in that browser.

Scoring answers

To set a score for correctly identifying the hotspot, enter the desired score in the Score textbox for Correct feedback.

To set a score for incorrectly identifying the hotspot, enter the desired score in the Score textbox for Incorrect feedback.

Showing feedback

You can choose to present feedback to participants based on the answer they submit. For example, you may wish to provide more details to the participant on why a particular answer is correct or incorrect, such as, "Sorry, that is not the province of Alberta. That is actually British Columbia."

To specify feedback for correct and/or incorrect answers, enter the text you desire in the appropriate Enter new feedback here field.

Adding a comment box

Adding a comment box to a question enables participants to provide a response to your Hotspot question.

To add a comment box to a question, simply click Add comment box on the left side of the screen. The comment box will be added to the bottom of the question.
