Assessment Security Issues Examined

STAMFORD, CT – September 8, 2003 – A new white paper explores the critical issues behind delivering computerized assessments safely and securely. In particular it reveals how organizations may be wasting thousands of dollars by ‘over engineering’ their assessment solutions.

Entitled ‘Delivering Computerized Assessments Safely and Securely,’ the paper was published today by assessment software specialists Questionmark. The paper defines the many types of quizzes, tests, exams and surveys that trainers and examiners use and aligns them with the environments and tools available to run them.

Explains Questionmark President Eric Shepherd: “With advances in the use of computers to assess knowledge, skills and attitudes, it’s become increasingly important to distinguish between various delivery and security requirements. Over-engineering low-stakes assessments can result in unnecessary costs and wasted time. But under-engineering high-stakes assessments can undermine people’s confidence in the validity of the results. The latest assessment tools and software enable users to deploy assessments with varying levels of security and safety. Getting that right can be critical to a successful assessment.”

‘Delivering Computerized Assessments Safely and Securely’ is designed to help people establish the correct balance between security and cost-effectiveness. It summarizes the key issues including

  • The purpose and nature of assessment and how to distinguish them
  • The delivery issues to consider for each assessment type
  • Delivery environments to consider including assessment centers, training rooms, desktops—and their benefits and pitfalls
  • How to create a good assessment environment
  • The software and technologies available to run assessments
