about

Presenters: Doug Burns, Level of Knowledge Program Administrator, and Al McFarland, Network Administrator, Afloat Training Group Atlantic

Title: Installation and Deployment of Perception over the U.S. Navy's Internet

    Synopsis:

The Afloat Training Group's Level of Knowledge assessment program is administered to all of the U.S. Navy's surface ships deployed around the world.

Personnel serving in the Atlantic and the Pacific take our assessments while at sea, some from as far away as Japan.

During this session, we will show how we are addressing the many inherent difficulties of delivering high-volume online exams --about 10,000 per month -- over vast distances. These challenges include Department of Defense security protocols as well as limited internet access and bandwidth.

Solutions include have ships access assessments on the internet in a variety of ways: via land lines when docked; at sea via satellites; and via paper when internet access is not available.

Using Questionmark's Printing and Scanning capabilities, we can now process the results of paper-based tests along with results we receive online.

We will explain how we have worked together with Questionmark to improve Perception's response times over long-distance internet connections and will show how we use a Scantron machine to process bubble sheets.

    Learning Objectives:

    • See creative approaches to the challenges of long-distance assessment delivery
    • Understand the intricacies of working with high-level security protocols
    • Get tips for using Printing and Scanning

    Recommended Experience Level: Immediate
