University of Luton opts for Perception for Summative testing The University of Luton has chosen Questionmark to supply an institutional-wide license for its Perception testing and assessment software to provide the framework for its new Internet computerised summative and examination solution. The new system will supersede Questionmark for Windows within its testing centres. Questionmark was awarded the contract after a rigorous tendering and evaluation process by the University of Luton, which they based upon their experience as one of the first universities in the country to deploy computerised testing for certification purposes. Commented Luton’s Deputy Director of Lifelong Learning Dr Mark Atlay: “Questionmark demonstrated that Perception offered the features and tools that we had identified as key to our requirements. But we were also impressed by Questionmark’s commitment to bringing in new features and tools that are specifically geared to making summative testing more effective and reliable. That includes the introduction of Perception’s new software, P2G (Perception to Go) which will enable us to deploy our server without having to worry about excessive loading caused by many students logging on simultaneously at the start of an exam. Perception Secure Browser’s ability to control users’ movement around the Intranet was also a substantial benefit.” Perception to Go enables remote users to synchronise from their Windows PCs to their web servers and pull down new Perception assessments scheduled by an administrator. The users can then disconnect from the network and answer questions, receive feedback offline, and merge results back to their web servers when they reconnect. Commented Vivienne Shaughnessy, Questionmark International Business Development Director: “Luton were one of the first universities in the UK to seriously use computerised assessment for summative testing and as a result probably know as much about this side of testing and assessment than any other educational institution in the country. It is therefore particularly pleasing to be successful in this tender. We have spent a considerable amount of our efforts recently improving the way that Perception handles the rigors of summative testing so that Universities and other testing centers can get the best possible value out of their implementations as this application is becoming increasingly important.” Luton will also be deploying for Perception for diagnostic and formative testing across a wide range of departments.
