Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service Improves Training and Monitoring of Critical Fire Fighting Skills using Questionmark Perception

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service has implemented a new training policy to ensure its staff meets the Service's recommended levels of knowledge and skills for fire fighting. The system has been developed using Questionmark's Perception software to provide an interactive assessment mechanism that is available at all times across the Service, using the Service intranet. Perception was chosen because it offered web capabilities, ease of use and the ability to customise easily.

The new training is designed to deliver a new dimension to the existing training infrastructure at Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service. It is being used as one tool of a range that are available to Officers and has been licensed to make it available to all uniformed members of staff across the Lancashire brigade. Fire fighters and Officers will be tested on essential skills for specific roles, procedures and rules & regulations.

Already, a set of trial questions has been sent out to the staff to enable them to become accustomed to the new system. Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service is the first of its kind to go down this route and it is expected that others will follow. In fact, if the system is successfully implemented in Lancashire, it may well go Service-wide.

More specifically, at Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, use of the software may extend into the International Training Centre. It may be used for In-Service surveys, and the reporting package used for collating and publishing results that are currently paper-based.
