Presenter: Gregory Furter - EMLYON Business School

Title: Using “Regular Expressions” when Importing Questions from a Word or Excel Document

Synopsis:

This session will examine EMLYON Business School’s approach to importing large numbers of items into its Perception repository, many of which were originally created and saved in Word or Excel documents.

The large number of items in these formats made it impractical to simply copy-and-paste them into Questionmark’s tools one at a time. Likewise, reformatting the items for import using the standard find-replace formatting tools within Word and Excel proved too time consuming. This session will explain a technique using the free software Notepad++ and its “regular expressions” enabled search and replace feature to quickly generate a fully formatted text file ready for importing into Perception.

This case study involves an explanation of regular expressions with some book references and a demo with different kinds of documents.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how to save time importing huge numbers of pre-written questions
  • Understand the concept of regular expressions and how to simply, yet effectively, use them
  • Make it easier to work with non-geek professors who need an easier way to get their items into Perception
