Questionmark Case Study

The Master’s College and Seminary Case Study

Background

Founded in 1927, The Master’s College and Seminary provides a non-denominational liberal arts education fully integrated with the Christian faith. The College believes that personal attention in a small college atmosphere is a vital element to the campus. In order to serve its two campus sites, 1,100 students, and more than 50 academic programs effectively, the College needed a system that would provide an integrated modern system with a centralized database.

SunGard SCT PowerCAMPUS

SunGard’s SCT PowerCAMPUS had the functionality and provided the level of personal attention that Master’s desired. In March 2001, The Master’s College selected PowerCAMPUS as the foundation for its new web-enabled student- and administrative- information system. Since the implementation of the SCT PowerCAMPUS modules, there has been noticeable improvement in Master’s processes and productivity. Master’s was able to unite three very large and redundant databases into one. The SQL Server Database Management System made it possible to move many tasks and reports to Web-based applications, some of which are contained in the SCT PowerCAMPUS IQ.Web system, fulfilling one of the College’s original objectives: a Web-accessible information system.

Questionmark Integration

In July 2004, The Master’s College, SunGard SCT and Questionmark announced the integration of the SCT PowerCAMPUS IQ.Web system with the Questionmark™ Perception™ assessment management system. By integrating the technologies, Master’s is better able to objectively measure student outcomes that support institutional accreditation. Additionally, the College is also providing faculty and students with new online assessment and survey options that enrich the learning environment.

Assessment and Accreditation
The accreditation process is critical for institutions in developing and sustaining effective educational programs and assures the educational community, the general public, and other organizations that an institution has met high standards of quality and effectiveness. To receive accreditation, an institution must track objective, measurable proof that students are accomplishing pre-set objectives.

"Learning isn’t just about giving students’ grades,” said The Master’s College Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. John Hughes. “And accreditation isn’t about the number of A’s and B’s earned. It is important for us to measure year-over-year learning progress to better understand our strengths, as well as areas that we can improve.”

Historically, measuring student learning outcomes has been difficult for institutions. By integrating the SCT PowerCAMPUS administrative system with the Questionmark Perception assessment management system, The Master’s College is better able to use online exam technologies and capture a history of hard test data that can be analyzed to show progress over time.

Partnering for Success
Questionmark Perception provides the tools and technology needed to author, administer, deliver, and report on computerized assessments. SunGard’s SCT PowerCAMPUS is a reliable and affordable software system that helps smaller institutions manage their administrative needs; the key to unifying their digital campuses. By joining the two systems through visual, application, and data integration, the College is better able to evaluate sophisticated assessments of students’ knowledge, skills, aptitudes, and opinions. Faculty and students have seamless access to tests and surveys through the SCT PowerCAMPUS IQ.Web course manager and course homepage.

Increased Flexibility
“This project is giving our faculty flexible new options to evaluate their own courses and student progress,” said Trevor Wallis, assistant professor of computer and information sciences at The Master’s College. “Students can take advantage of our wireless network and appreciate the improved access to assignments and tests.”

The Master’s College has deployed these new capabilities to its faculty and students. Other educational institutions can now use SCT PowerCAMPUS and Questionmark Perception as a single integrated solution, with SCT serving as the customer’s point of contact to obtain and support the integration.
